Swimmers and Paddlers Enjoying Morrison Springs

Not every kayaking trip needs has to be a major undertaking involving hours of planning and preparation, in fact, a trip to Morrison Springs in Walton county can be short and sweet or long and leisurely depending on your preference. This 161 acre park features a swim area, diving platform, separate boat ramp, restroom & picnic amenities and a large boardwalk overlooking the 250 foot diameter spring pool.

Morrison Springs has an average water temperature of 68 degrees and produces upwards of 48 million gallons of water per day. The spring is a popular spot for snorkelers and swimmers looking for a way to beat the summer heat cave and for cave divers eager to explore the underwater cave system. Paddlers enjoy the spring run for the amazing views and easy access to the Choctawhatchee River less than a mile downstream.

In addition to stunning underwater views, a variety of wildlife such as fish, turtles and wading birds can be seen in abundance along the spring run to the river. Other notable imagery along the run is a dilapidated floating fish shack and a sunken boat that adds an air of mystery to the area especially when there is a mist rising off of the cool waters.

The visibility in the spring and spring run is usually clear unless the nearby Choctawhatchee river is running high. Paddlers planning to tackle the river should be aware of the water levels prior to venturing out of the spring run. The Choctawhatchee can be a powerful and dangerous place for the unprepared paddler.

Getting to Morrison Springs is easy. From I-10 exit south at Exit 96 (Ponce de Leon) onto Hwy 81. Continue six miles and turn left onto Hwy 181-A. In 1.5 miles turn right onto Morrison Springs road and follow it to the end. If coming from Hwy 20 at Bruce follow Hwy 81 north for approximately 15 miles to Hwy 181-A. Turn right and proceed 1.5 miles to Morrison Springs road and follow it to the end. Located at coordinates 30.657725, -85.904678 or 899 Morrison Springs Road, Vernon, FL.

Morrison Springs is open from dawn until dusk daily and there is no charge for admission. No alcohol, pets or glass bottles permitted.
